Mailchimp vs Aledamail: which is right for you in 2026?

Mailchimp charges for every contact whether they open your emails or not. Aledamail lets you bring your own sending server and pay only for the platform. Here is how they compare.

Mailchimp is the name most people think of when they hear "email marketing." It is easy to start with, well-known, and has decent features. It is also expensive as your list grows, limits you to their own infrastructure, and has been steadily moving features behind higher-tier paywalls.

Aledamail takes a different approach: you bring your own sending server (SendGrid, Mailgun, or Amazon SES), pay a flat platform fee, and keep full control of your sending reputation and costs. This guide compares both platforms honestly so you can decide which fits your situation.

The fundamental difference: bundled vs BYOS

The biggest difference between Mailchimp and Aledamail is not features — it is the infrastructure model.

Mailchimp is bundled. Your plan includes sending infrastructure. You pay one price that covers the platform and delivery. This is simple to start with, but it means you share IP reputation with Mailchimp's other customers, and the cost scales sharply as your list grows.

Aledamail is BYOS (Bring Your Own Sending Server). You connect your own account at an email infrastructure provider — SendGrid, Mailgun, or Amazon SES. You pay the platform fee to Aledamail and the delivery costs directly to your provider. You own your sending reputation. At any meaningful list size, this is dramatically cheaper.

What is BYOS really like to set up? Connecting a sending server takes about 90 seconds. You copy four values from your provider's dashboard — host, port, username, password — and paste them into Aledamail. No coding, no server configuration. Read our full guide on SMTP setup.

Pricing comparison

Mailchimp's pricing is based on the number of contacts in your account, regardless of how many you actually email. If you have 10,000 contacts but only email 2,000 of them, you still pay for all 10,000.

Aledamail charges a flat monthly platform fee. Your delivery costs depend on how many emails you actually send and go directly to your infrastructure provider, typically at a fraction of what Mailchimp charges.

Real cost example: 10,000 contacts, 50,000 emails per month

Platform fee Mailchimp: ~$135/mo Aledamail: $49/mo
Sending infrastructure Included (shared) ~$10/mo via SendGrid
Total monthly cost ~$135/mo ~$59/mo

The savings grow as your list and send volume increase. At 50,000 contacts, Mailchimp's standard plan runs over $350 per month. Aledamail stays at $49 regardless of how many contacts you have on the Growth plan, with delivery costs still under $50/mo via Amazon SES at that volume.

Deliverability

Mailchimp's shared infrastructure means your deliverability is partly dependent on the behaviour of the millions of other senders using the same IP pools. If other Mailchimp users send spammy campaigns, it can affect your inbox placement too.

With Aledamail and your own sending server, you have isolated sending reputation. Your deliverability depends entirely on your own list hygiene and sending practices — not anyone else's. Over time, this typically results in better inbox placement for senders who maintain clean lists.

Worth knowing: Better infrastructure does not automatically mean better deliverability. You still need good list hygiene, proper authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and relevant content. But at least with BYOS, you are not dragged down by other people's mistakes.

Ease of use

Mailchimp is genuinely easier to get started with. You sign up, create a list, and send. There is no infrastructure to connect.

Aledamail requires one extra step: connecting a sending server. As we covered in our SMTP guide, this takes under two minutes and requires no coding. But it is still a step that Mailchimp does not have. If that step feels like a barrier, Mailchimp may be the right short-term choice — though you will likely revisit the decision as your costs grow.

Who should use Mailchimp

Mailchimp makes sense if you...

  • Are just starting out and want zero setup friction
  • Have a very small list (under 500 contacts)
  • Do not want to manage any infrastructure at all
  • Need deep e-commerce integrations (Shopify, WooCommerce)

Aledamail makes sense if you...

  • Have a growing list and want to control costs
  • Want your own sending reputation
  • Need automations without paying for a higher tier
  • Run campaigns for multiple clients (agency plans)
  • Want transactional email included without add-ons

Migration from Mailchimp

Moving from Mailchimp to Aledamail is straightforward. You export your subscriber list from Mailchimp as a CSV, import it into Aledamail, connect your sending server, and you are ready to send. The whole process takes under an hour for most lists.

Your automations will need to be rebuilt, but Aledamail's automation builder covers the same use cases — welcome sequences, re-engagement flows, drip campaigns — and they are included on all paid plans without the tier restrictions Mailchimp imposes.

The bottom line

Mailchimp built its reputation on simplicity and it deserves credit for that. But the pricing model penalises you for growing your list, the shared infrastructure limits your deliverability control, and features like transactional email and advanced automations require expensive upgrades.

Aledamail is a better fit for senders who have moved past the very early stage, want to own their sending infrastructure, and do not want to pay more just because their list is getting bigger. The extra two minutes of setup to connect a sending server pays for itself quickly.
